1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid any electrical accidents.
2. Locate the two air bag connector plugs on the left and right. Using a small flathead screwdriver, carefully pry open the small cover on top of each connector. Then, press the release tab to disconnect the airbag connectors.
3. Wait for at least 10 minutes to allow the airbag capacitors to fully discharge. This is a crucial step to ensure your safety while working on the steering wheel.
4. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the "On" position, but don't start the engine. This will release the steering column lock.
5. Look under the steering wheel, where the steering column connects to the dashboard. You'll see two holes on either side of the column.
6. Insert the ends of a steering wheel removal tool (which looks like a forked tool) into the holes. Twist the tool to release the spring clip that holds the steering wheel in place.
7. Once the clip is released, carefully pull the steering wheel toward you to remove it from the column.
8. Be careful not to drop the steering wheel, as it can cause damage.
9. Disconnect the electrical connector behind the steering wheel if it hasn't come off already.
10. Your steering wheel should now be removed.
11. Installation is the reverse of these steps. When you reinstall the steering wheel, ensure it is aligned properly before tightening the retaining bolts.
Remember, working with airbags and steering components requires attention to safety. If you're uncomfortable performing these steps, it's best to consult a qualified mechanic.
