1. Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels, but do not remove them completely.
3. Jack up the rear of the car until the wheels are off the ground.
4. Remove the lug nuts and wheels.
5. Locate the brake drum on the rear axle.
6. There is an access slot through the backplate. Look through this slot and locate the adjuster mechanism behind the drum. There is an adjuster gear with small teeth.
7. Insert a flat headed screwdriver into the slot in the backplate and engage it with the adjuster gear.
8. Turn the adjuster gear clockwise to tighten the brakes or counterclockwise to loosen them.
9. Continue turning the adjuster gear until the brakes are snug but not completely tight.
10. Replace the wheels and lug nuts and lower the car.
11. Test the brakes by applying them gently. The brakes should feel firm and engage smoothly.
