Where did cars originated?

While the invention of the car involved contributions from many inventors across different countries, the generally accepted birthplace of the automobile is Germany. Karl Benz is widely credited with inventing the first practical automobile in 1886. His Benz Patent-Motorwagen is considered the ancestor of the modern car. However, other inventors were working on similar self-propelled vehicles around the same time in various countries.
