- New fuel filter (check your owner's manual for the correct part number)
- Fuel filter wrench (optional, but can be helpful)
- Safety glasses
- Wrench or pliers
- Rags
- Gas-resistant gloves (optional)
Step 1: Locate the fuel filter.
The fuel filter on your 1998 Chevrolet Silverado is located under the vehicle, near the fuel tank. It is a cylindrical-shaped component with two fuel lines connected to it.
Step 2: Prepare the vehicle.
- Apply the parking brake and put chocks behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving.
- Turn off the engine and let it cool down completely.
- Relieve the fuel pressure in the system by opening the gas cap.
Step 3: Disconnect the fuel lines.
- Use a fuel filter wrench or a wrench and pliers to loosen and disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
- Be careful, as there may be some residual fuel in the lines, which could spill. Have a rag ready to catch any spills.
Step 4: Remove the old fuel filter.
- Once the fuel lines are disconnected, you can remove the old fuel filter by turning it counterclockwise.
Step 5: Install the new fuel filter.
- Before installing the new fuel filter, inspect it to make sure it is not damaged and that the O-rings are in place.
- Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the O-rings to help them seal properly.
- Screw the new fuel filter onto the fuel line until it is snug. Do not overtighten.
Step 6: Reconnect the fuel lines.
- Reconnect the fuel lines to the fuel filter, making sure that they are properly seated and tightened.
Step 7: Start the engine.
- Turn on the ignition key to the "ON" position but do not start the engine.
- This will allow the fuel pump to prime the system and fill the fuel filter with gas.
- Once the fuel filter is full, start the engine.
Step 8: Check for leaks.
- Inspect the fuel filter and fuel lines for any leaks. If you find any leaks, tighten the connections until the leak stops.
