Natural gas for vehicles is typically used in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG). The property of gas that is utilized when natural gas is supplied for vehicles is its compressibility. CNG is stored in a high-pressure container onboard the vehicle, which allows for a greater amount of gas to be stored in a smaller volume compared to storing it in a gaseous state at atmospheric pressure.
The high-pressure storage of CNG enables vehicles to travel longer distances on a single fill compared to vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel. Additionally, CNG is a cleaner-burning fuel, producing lower emissions and reducing the environmental impact of transportation.
