Searching for a good looking, affordable electric vehicle (EV) with a decent range? Volkswagen’s newest EV could be the one for you…
Volkswagen’s ID.3 is a mass market fully electric car which marks a new era for the car brand. Although the brand has other vehicles with an electric powertrain option (like their e Golf), the ID range is the manufacturer’s first electric only line, with no petrol or diesel variants available.
The ID.3 is based on the car maker’s new and highly anticipated MEB platform, which the vehicle will share with other vehicles in the ID range, as well as sister companies electric vehicle models heading to the market in the near future such as Skoda and SEAT. After a long wait, many teasers and press leaks, the road ready version was finally revealed in its full camouflage-free glory at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2019.
Hats off to Volkswagen as this ID.3 is also the world’s first production car with a carbon neutral footprint. This will be achieved by using 100% renewable energy to produce the car, and any unavoidable emissions in the supply chain will be offset by climate projects.

Prices for the ID.3 will start from around £22,000, making it one of the cheapest electric cars on the market. However, the first edition model will be slightly higher priced and start from around £35,000 due to some extra ‘special edition’ features. The previously unreleased car had proven to be popular with over 30,000 reservation deposits taken for the ID.3 (10,000 of these were in the first day). We expect to have lease prices for this new electric car soon…
Initially Volkswagen plan to introduce the mid-sized battery in 3 specifications, which will be the EV’s 1st Edition versions. Two other battery size options are due to follow. The first edition has a 58 kWh battery, and the basic edition comes with navigation system, a DAB+ digital radio, seat heating and steering wheel heating, a Mode 2 charging cable and 18-inch light-alloy wheels. (higher spec 1st edition comes with additional features such as panoramic glass roof, premium sound system and AR heads up display)
The car includes ID.Light; a new journey assist feature helping you navigate through traffic, communicating with you visually. ID.Light will also respond with light when responding to your voice control commands.

The ID.3 has a stylish exterior and it is the first car to feature the company’s new simplified logo. The interior of this electric car has minimalist and spacious styling, offering more room than any other vehicle in the category.
Interior styling simplicity has become a trend amongst new EVs on the market (especially Tesla’s Model 3 interior), keeping things simple and clean inside the vehicle. The ID.3 1st max edition also features a panoramic glass roof which adds to the light roomy feeling of this EV.
The electric car will have 3 battery sizes to choose from:
Official WLTP range figures vary between 205 and 340 miles to a charge, depending on the battery size. Charging times for the ID.3 are battery size dependant (refer to table).

At the 2018 Pike’s Peak hill climb in Colorado, USA, an electric car set a new overall record for the first time in the event’s history. Frenchman Romain Dumas completed the course in the all-electric Volkswagen I.D. R (the first electric racing car designed by Volkswagen) with a time of 7:57.148, breaking the 8 minute barrier for the first time.
The uphill course has 156 turns and it’s annual race is also referred to as ‘The Race to the Clouds‘, we wrote about this hill climb back in 2012 when more and more electric cars started to compete in this iconic Motorsport event.
