- A multimeter
- A 12-volt battery
- Jumper cables
Procedure:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
2. Connect the positive terminal of the multimeter to the positive terminal of the battery and the negative terminal of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the battery. The multimeter should read 12 volts.
3. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. The multimeter should read between 13 and 15 volts.
4. If the multimeter does not read between 13 and 15 volts, the charging system is not working properly.
5. To test the stator, disconnect the voltage regulator from the stator. Connect the positive terminal of the multimeter to the positive terminal of the stator and the negative terminal of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the stator. The multimeter should read between 30 and 60 volts.
6. If the stator is not putting out between 30 and 60 volts, it is defective.
7. To test the voltage regulator, disconnect the voltage regulator from the stator and the battery. Connect the positive terminal of the multimeter to the positive terminal of the voltage regulator and the negative terminal of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the voltage regulator. The multimeter should read between 13 and 15 volts.
8. If the voltage regulator is not putting out between 13 and 15 volts, it is defective.
