1. Prepare the vehicle. Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake and disconnect the battery's negative terminal.
2. Remove the drive belt. Locate the power steering pump drive belt and loosen the tensioner pulley to remove the belt.
3. Disconnect the steering lines. Identify the pressure and return steering lines connected to the steering pump. Disconnect the lines using a wrench while preventing the fluid from spilling.
4. Remove the mounting bolts. Locate and remove the bolts that hold the steering pump in place. There may be additional components, such as brackets, that need to be removed.
5. Take out the old steering pump. Once the mounting bolts are removed, you can gently lift the steering pump out of its place. Be careful not to spill the remaining fluid.
6. Install the new steering pump. Place the new steering pump into the mounting bracket and secure it with the mounting bolts you removed earlier. Ensure the steering pump is properly aligned.
7. Reconnect the steering lines. Reconnect the pressure and return steering lines to the new steering pump. Tighten the line connections to prevent leaks.
8. Install the drive belt. Reattach the power steering pump drive belt and adjust the tensioner pulley to ensure proper tension.
9. Reattach the battery. Reconnect the battery's negative terminal.
10. Add power steering fluid. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with the recommended fluid.
11. Bleed the system. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times to circulate the fluid and release trapped air. Make sure the fluid level does not drop too low during this process.
12. Test the system. Start the engine and check for any leaks or abnormal noises from the steering system.
It's important to note that working with the power steering system can be messy due to the fluid involved. Having a fluid catch pan and properly cleaning the area is essential. If you are not comfortable with working on the steering system, it's best to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic to ensure a safe and proper installation.
