How do you disassemble a transaxle on 1985 Porsche 944?

To disassemble the transaxle on a 1985 Porsche 944, you will need the following tools:

1. 9mm socket

2. 10mm socket

3. 13mm socket

4. 15mm socket

5. 17mm socket

6. 19mm socket

7. 22mm socket

8. 30mm socket

9. Ratchet

10. Extension

11. Torque wrench

12. Flat-head screwdriver

13. Phillips-head screwdriver

14. Hammer

15. Drain pan

16. Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Raise the vehicle and support on jack stands.

2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

3. Remove the transmission oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain into a pan.

4. Unbolt the driveshaft from the transmission and remove the driveshaft.

5. Unbolt the starter from the transmission and remove the starter.

6. Unbolt the clutch cable from the transmission and remove the clutch cable.

7. Unbolt the slave cylinder from the transmission and remove the slave cylinder.

8. Remove the bolts holding the transmission to the engine and remove the transmission from the vehicle.

9. Place the transmission on a work bench and remove the bell housing bolts and remove the bell housing.

10. Remove the input shaft bearing retainer and remove the input shaft bearing.

11. Remove the clutch release bearing and the throw-out bearing.

12. Remove the countershaft bearing retainer and remove the countershaft bearing.

13. Remove the output shaft bearing retainer and remove the output shaft bearing.

14. Remove the fifth gear shaft and remove the fifth gear synchronizer.

15. Remove the fourth gear shaft and remove the fourth gear synchronizer.

16. Remove the third gear shaft and remove the third gear synchronizer.

17. Remove the second gear shaft and remove the second gear synchronizer.

18. Remove the first gear shaft and remove the first gear synchronizer.

19. Remove the reverse gear shaft and remove the reverse gear synchronizer.

20. Reassemble the transaxle in reverse order. When reinstalling the bell housing it might help if you put the transaxle in first gear.

*Note*:

- Use a torque wrench for all reinstallation.

- Make sure to use new gaskets and seals when reinstalling the transmission.
