What is an exhaust filter on a Dodge diesel truck?

A Dodge diesel truck's exhaust filter refers to its diesel particulate filter (DPF). This is a component of the exhaust system designed to trap soot and other particulate matter from the engine's exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. In newer Dodge diesel trucks, it's often integrated with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and sometimes a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system as part of a larger emissions control system. The DPF itself is a filter element, typically ceramic, that captures the soot. The system then uses various methods, often including burning off the trapped soot (regeneration), to keep the filter from clogging.
