Preparation:
1. Purchase the necessary materials:
- New oil filter (Yamaha OEM filter recommended or any equivalent filter 5GH-13440-01)
- New crush washer for the drain bolt (M12x1.5)
- New engine oil (SAE 10W-40 motorcycle-specific oil)
2. Gather your tools:
- Oil filter wrench
- 17 mm wrench or socket
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
Oil Drain:
1. Warm up your engine for a few minutes by riding or letting it idle. This helps to thin out the oil and makes it easier to drain.
2. Position your oil pan beneath the oil drain bolt located at the bottom of the engine.
3. Use a 17mm wrench or socket to loosen and remove the oil drain bolt.
* Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.
4. Allow all of the old oil to drain out into the oil pan.
* This may take several minutes.
Oil Filter Change:
1. While the oil is draining, position your oil filter wrench around the oil filter located near the top of the engine.
2. Rotate the oil filter wrench counterclockwise to loosen and remove the oil filter.
3. Carefully lift the oil filter out of its housing, taking care not to spill any remaining oil.
4. Apply a thin layer of new engine oil to the gasket surface of the new oil filter.
5. Screw the new oil filter into place by hand until it is snug, then use the oil filter wrench to tighten it another ½ to ¾ of a turn.
* Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
Reinstall Drain Bolt & Add Oil:
1. Put the crush washer on the threads of the oil drain bolt.
2. Reinsert the oil drain bolt into the engine and use a 17mm wrench to snugly tighten it.
* Hand-tighten the drain plug first, then tighten by an additional ⅓ turn.
3. Use a funnel to add the recommended amount of new engine oil to the engine through the oil fill port which is located on the right side of the engine.
* The TTR250 requires approximately 1.2 quarts (1.1 liters) of oil.
* Ensure you check the oil level after adding the oil to make sure you do not overfill it. The TTR250 has a sight glass on the right side of the engine to check the oil level.
Check Oil Level & Start Engine
1. Start your engine and let it run for a few minutes.
2. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for the engine oil to settle.
3. Check the oil level again through the sight glass on the right side of the engine to ensure it's between the upper and lower marks on the sight glass.
4. Replace the oil fill cap.
Disposal
Dispose of the used oil and filter responsibly according to local regulations.
That completes the oil change process for your 2005 Yamaha TTR250. Remember, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommended service intervals and specifications for your specific motorcycle.
