To set the ignition points on a Ford 240 cubic inch engine, you will need the following tools and materials:
* Feeler gauge
* Wrench set
* Screwdriver
* Timing light
* Socket wrench
Instructions:
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the distributor cap and remove it by turning it counterclockwise.
Turn the crankshaft of the engine until the timing mark on the harmonic balancer aligns with the "0" mark on the timing scale.
Insert a 0.016" feeler gauge between the points.
Loosen the point set mounting screws.
Turn the point set cam until the points just open.
Tighten the point set mounting screws.
Reinstall the distributor cap.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Start the engine and check the ignition timing with a timing light.
If necessary, adjust the ignition timing by loosening the distributor hold-down bolt and rotating the distributor.
