- Jack and jack stands or ramps
- Socket set
- Phillips head screwdriver
- New thermostat
- Coolant
- Funnel
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare your car.
• Park your Mazda on a level surface and turn off the engine.
• Engage the parking brake.
• Raise the front of the car with a jack and jack stands, or drive it up on ramps.
Step 2: Drain the coolant.
• Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator (passenger side).
• Place a drain pan under the drain plug and open it with the Phillips head screwdriver.
• Allow all of the coolant to drain from the radiator.
Step 3: Remove the old thermostat.
• The thermostat housing is located on the front of the engine, just above the water pump.
• Use the socket set to remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place.
• Carefully remove the thermostat housing and the old thermostat from the engine.
Step 4: Install the new thermostat.
• Insert the new thermostat into the thermostat housing, making sure that the gasket is seated properly.
• Replace the thermostat housing and tighten the bolts.
Step 5: Refill the coolant.
• Use the funnel to add new coolant to the radiator until it is full.
• Replace the radiator cap.
Step 6: Lower your car.
• Carefully lower the front of your car with the jack and jack stands or drive it off of the ramps.
Step 7: Test the thermostat.
• Start your car and let it run for a few minutes.
• Check the temperature gauge to make sure that the engine is not overheating.
Note: It may take several minutes for the new thermostat to open and allow coolant to flow through the engine.
