Tools Needed:
- New transmission oil as recommended by your vehicle's owner's manual
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench/Socket set
Step 1: Prepare Your Car
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
Make sure the engine and transmission are cool to avoid burns.
Step 2: Locate the Drain Plug
- Underneath your vehicle, locate the transmission drain plug. It is usually a 17mm bolt on the bottom of the transmission pan.
Note: Some models may have two drain plugs, one for the transmission and one for the differential.
Step 3: Place the Oil Drain Pan
- Position an oil drain pan directly under the drain plug to catch the old oil as it drains out.
Step 4: Drain the Old Oil
- Use a wrench or socket to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Allow all the old oil to drain completely. This can take a few minutes.
Step 5: Replace the Drain Plug
- Once the oil has drained, clean and inspect the drain plug.
- Replace the drain plug and tighten it securely to prevent leaks.
Step 6: Add New Oil
- Locate the transmission fluid filler plug, which is usually at the top of the transmission pan.
- Use a funnel to add the specified amount of new transmission fluid.
- Refer to your owner's manual for the precise amount needed.
Step 7: Check Fluid Level and Test Drive
- Start your car and let it run for a few minutes.
- Recheck the transmission oil level using the dipstick or sight glass, if applicable.
- Top off with more oil if needed.
- Take the vehicle for a short test drive and listen for any unusual noises.
Step 8: Recycle Old Oil
- Dispose of the old transmission oil and the oil filter appropriately at a local recycling center or service location.
Tips:
- Transmission oil changes are typically recommended around every 30,000 miles or as specified in your vehicle's owner's manual.
- Consider changing the oil filter if equipped in your vehicle.
- If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, it's best to have the transmission fluid changed by a qualified mechanic.
Remember, consult your owner's manual or refer to a professional if you have any doubts about changing transmission oil or encounter any issues during the process.
