1. Drain about a gallon of coolant from the engine. Open the petcock on the bottom of the radiator (or remove the lower radiator hose.
2. Locate the thermostat housing on the driver’s side of the engine, towards the front. It’s a circular housing with a bolt in the center.
3. Unbolt the thermostat housing. Be careful not to drop the bolt or get coolant in your eyes.
4. Pull out the old thermostat. It’s a round metal disc with a spring-loaded valve.
5. Inspect the thermostat. If the valve doesn’t move freely or if the sealing surface is damaged, replace it.
6. Install the new thermostat. Make sure that the valve is facing up and that the gasket is properly seated.
7. Bolt the thermostat housing back into place.
8. Reinstall the lower radiator hose or close the petcock, and refill the cooling system with coolant.
