Method 1: Clip-on Handle
This is the most common type.
1. Locate the retaining clip: Look closely at the handle. There's usually a small clip or retaining ring (sometimes a small hole or slot) around the base of the handle where it meets the door panel. Sometimes it's visible, sometimes you'll have to feel for it.
2. Remove the clip: You might need a small flathead screwdriver or a trim removal tool (plastic is best to avoid scratching) to carefully pry the clip away from the handle. Gently work your way around the perimeter of the handle. The clip usually just pops off. Be very careful not to damage the plastic.
3. Pull off the handle: Once the clip is released, the handle should pull straight off.
Method 2: Screw-on Handle
Less common but possible.
1. Locate the screw(s): Carefully inspect the handle. Sometimes there's a small screw hidden under a plastic cover or cap on the handle itself or at its base.
2. Remove the screw(s): Use a small screwdriver to remove the screw(s).
3. Pull off the handle: Once the screw(s) are removed, the handle should pull off.
Troubleshooting:
* Handle stuck: If the handle is stuck, try using some penetrating lubricant (like WD-40) around the base of the handle to loosen it up. Let it sit for a few minutes before attempting to remove it again.
* Broken clip: If the clip breaks, you might need to replace it. You can often find replacement clips or even a whole new window crank handle at an auto parts store.
* Difficult to see: If you can't visually locate the clip or screw, carefully feel around the base of the handle with your fingers. You should be able to detect the clip or screw.
Important Note: Before you start, it's a good idea to take some photos of the process as you go. This will help you remember how to put everything back together correctly. Also, be gentle to avoid breaking any plastic parts. If you're unsure about any step, it's always best to consult a repair manual specific to your 2003 Chevy S10.
