How do you replace the distributor cap on a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 van?

Tools and Materials Needed

* New distributor cap

* 5/16-inch nut driver

* Flat-head screwdriver

* Clean rag

Instructions

1. Park your van in a well-ventilated area and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down completely.

2. Open the hood of your van.

3. Locate the distributor cap. It is a black plastic cap located at the front of the engine, near the top.

4. Use the 5/16-inch nut driver to loosen the two nuts that hold the distributor cap in place.

5. Remove the two nuts and lift off the distributor cap.

6. Inspect the inside of the distributor cap for any signs of damage or wear. If the inside of the cap is damaged or worn, replace the cap.

7. If the inside of the cap is in good condition, simply replace the cap and secure it with the two nuts.

8. Start the engine and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts until the leaks stop.

Tips

* When replacing the distributor cap, make sure that the rotor is pointing to the number one spark plug wire.

* If the rotor is not pointing to the number one spark plug wire, rotate the distributor until the rotor is in the correct position.

* Be careful not to drop the distributor cap into the engine. If the cap falls into the engine, it could damage the engine.
