How do you change the front brakes and rotors of a 1995 Chevy Lumina?

Front Brake and Rotor Replacement

1. Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

2. Locate the lug nuts on the front wheels and loosen them 1/2 turn with a lug wrench

Do not remove the lug nuts completely.

3. Raise the front of the car with a jack and place it on jack stands

Ensure that the car is stable and secure before proceeding.

4. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels

Set the lug nuts and wheels aside in a safe place.

5. Locate the brake caliper and remove the two bolts holding it in place.

Use a ratchet and socket wrench to remove the bolts.

Be careful not to drop the bolts.

6. Remove the brake caliper from the rotor

Hang the caliper from the suspension with a piece of wire.

Do not let the caliper hang by the brake line.

7. Remove the two bolts holding the rotor in place.

Use a ratchet and socket wrench to remove the bolts.

Be careful not to drop the bolts.

8. Take off the rotor.

Be careful not to drop the rotor.

9. Clean the rotor mating surface and the hub flange.

Use a wire brush to remove any rust or debris.

10. Install the new rotor

Place the new rotor on the hub flange and align the holes.

Insert the two bolts and tighten them until snug.

11. Install the brake caliper

Place the caliper over the rotor and align the holes.

Insert the two bolts and tighten them until snug.

12. Reconnect the brake line to the caliper.

Tighten the brake line until snug.

13. Install the wheel and lug nuts.

Hand-tighten the lug nuts until snug.

14. Lower the car from the jack stands.

15. Tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern, tightening each lug nut 1/4 turn until they are snug.

16. Test the brakes.

Gently press the brake pedal to make sure the brakes are working properly.
