How do you rebuild 1970 vw bug transmission?

Step 1: Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

Use a floor jack and jack stands to properly support the vehicle. Use a drain pan to catch fluid.

1. Remove the four bolts holding the transmission to the engine.

2. Remove the two bolts holding the transmission to the bell housing.

3. Remove driveshaft.

Step 2: Disassemble the transmission.

1. Remove the reverse light switch.

2. Remove the shift lever.

3. Remove the clutch release lever.

4. Remove the clutch release bearing.

5. Remove the main drive gear.

6. Remove the layshaft.

7. Remove the counter gear.

8. Remove the reverse gear.

9. Remove the idler gear.

Step 3: Inspect the transmission parts for wear or damage.

Replace any worn or damaged parts.

Step 4: Reassemble the transmission.

1. Install the idle gear.

2. Install the reverse gear.

3. Install the counter gear.

4. Install the layshaft.

5. Install the main drive gear.

6. Install the clutch release bearing.

7. Install the clutch release lever.

8. Install the shift lever.

9. Install the reverse light switch.

10. Make any necessary adjustments. Tighten the shift lever and linkage. Check the oil level.

Step 5: Reinstall the transmission in the vehicle.

Make sure transmission input shaft pilot bushing is fully seated in clutch disk hub or transmission may bind and seize.

1. Install the transmission to the bell housing.

2. Install the four bolts holding the transmission to the engine.

3. Install driveshaft.

4. Add fluid to transmission.

Step 6: Test drive the vehicle.

Check for proper shifting and operation of the clutch.
