1989 Nissan Maxima V6 Automatic Water Pump Replacement

Location:

The water pump on the 1989 Nissan Maxima V6 automatic is located on the front of the engine, just below the timing belt.

Tools Required:

- Phillips head screwdriver

- Flathead screwdriver

- 17mm socket

- 10mm socket

- 5mm Allen wrench

- Pliers

- Funnel

- Bucket

Parts Required:

- New water pump

- Water pump gasket

- Coolant

Procedure:

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Park your car on a level surface and apply the parking brake.

3. Allow the engine to cool down completely.

4. Remove the fan shroud.

5. Remove the serpentine belt.

6. Remove the water pump pulley bolt and washer.

7. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump from the engine.

8. Clean the mating surface of the water pump and block.

9. Install the new water pump gasket and water pump.

10. Install the water pump mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque.

11. Install the water pump pulley bolt and washer and tighten it to the specified torque.

12. Install the serpentine belt.

13. Install the fan shroud.

14. Reattach the negative battery terminal.

15. Fill the radiator with the specified amount of coolant.

16. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the coolant.

Tips:

Be careful not to drop the water pump mounting bolts into the engine. If they do fall in, use a magnet to retrieve them.

Ensure that the water pump gasket is properly seated before installing the water pump.
