Procedure
Step 1: Raise and support the vehicle
- Use a jack and jack stands to raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely. This will allow you to access the oil pan.
Step 2: Remove the oil drain plug
- Place an oil drain pan under the oil pan.
- Use a 17mm wrench to loosen the oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain completely into the pan.
- Be patient, this can take some time.
Step 3: Remove the oil filter
- Use an oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter.
- Be cautious as there may still be some oil in the filter housing.
Step 4: Remove the oil pan bolts
- Locate the bolts that secure the oil pan to the engine block.
- Use a 17mm wrench or socket to loosen and remove the bolts.
- Be careful not to drop the bolts.
Step 5: Remove the oil pan
- Once all of the bolts have been removed, gently pry the oil pan off of the engine block using a flathead screwdriver or pry bar.
- Remove any old gasket material that may be stuck to the engine block.
Step 6: Clean the mating surfaces
- Use a degreaser and a scrub brush to thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the engine block and the oil pan.
- This will ensure that the new gasket will seal properly.
Step 7: Apply RTV silicone sealant
- Apply a thin bead of RTV silicone sealant to the mating surface of the oil pan.
- Make sure to apply the sealant evenly and do not over-apply.
Step 8: Install the new oil pan gasket
- Place the new oil pan gasket on the oil pan.
- Make sure that the gasket is seated properly and that it does not overlap with any of the oil pan bolts.
Step 9: Reinstall the oil pan
- Carefully align the oil pan with the engine block and slide it into place.
- Hand-tighten the oil pan bolts until they are snug.
Step 10: Tighten the oil pan bolts
- Use a 17mm wrench or socket to tighten the oil pan bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Tighten the bolts until they are snug, but do not over-tighten.
Step 11: Reinstall the oil filter
- Screw on a new oil filter by hand until it is snug.
- Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
Step 12: Reinstall the oil drain plug
- Screw the oil drain plug back into the oil pan and tighten it until it is snug.
Step 13: Lower the vehicle
- Use the jack and jack stands to lower the vehicle back down to the ground.
Step 14: Add new oil
- Use a funnel to add new oil to the engine through the oil fill cap.
- Add the amount of oil specified in the owner's manual.
Step 15: Check for leaks
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Look under the vehicle for any oil leaks.
- If you see any leaks, tighten the oil pan bolts or oil filter until the leak stops.
Step 16: Test drive
- After you have ensured there are no leaks, take the vehicle for a test drive.
- Listen for any unusual noises and make sure the oil pressure gauge is reading normal.
