Parts Required:
- New Thermostat (195° F)
- Intake Manifold Gasket
- Thermostat Gasket
- Coolant (DexCool)
Tools:
- Socket wrench set
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Funnel
- Rags
- Safety glasses
Instructions:
1. Park your car on a level surface and allow the engine to cool down.
2. Locate the thermostat housing. On the 1989 Buick 3.8, it's located on the front of the engine, below the water pump.
3. Place a drain pan under the thermostat housing to catch any coolant that may spill.
4. Loosen the bolts that hold the thermostat housing in place using the socket wrench set.
5. Remove the bolts and carefully remove the thermostat housing. Be careful not to spill any coolant.
6. Inspect the old thermostat and gasket. If they are damaged or worn, replace them with new ones.
7. Place the new thermostat in the thermostat housing, making sure that it is seated correctly.
8. Replace the thermostat gasket and tighten the bolts that hold the thermostat housing in place.
9. Refill the cooling system with coolant using the funnel.
10. Run the engine for a few minutes and check for leaks.
11. Close the hood of the car and dispose of the old thermostat and gasket properly.
