Gather your materials:
ATF fluid (check your owner's manual for the correct type and capacity)
Funnel
Jack and jack stands (optional, but recommended for easier access)
Preparation:
Park your vehicle on a level surface.
Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.
Allow the transmission and engine to cool down if they are hot.
Locate the transmission fluid dipstick:
Open the hood of your Galant.
The transmission fluid dipstick is usually located near the back of the engine bay, near the transmission. It may have a red or orange handle.
Check the transmission fluid level:
Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
Reinsert the dipstick all the way back in, then pull it out again and check the fluid level.
The fluid level should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
Adding transmission fluid:
If the fluid level is low, you will need to add transmission fluid.
Use the funnel to pour the transmission fluid into the transmission fluid filler tube, which is usually located near the transmission dipstick.
Add the fluid slowly and check the dipstick regularly until the fluid level reaches the "Full" mark.
Reinsert the dipstick:
Once you have added enough fluid, reinsert the dipstick all the way back into the transmission.
Lower the vehicle:
If you used jack stands, lower the vehicle carefully.
Precautions:
Do not overfill the transmission fluid, as this can cause transmission problems.
Use the correct type of transmission fluid as specified in your owner's manual.
If the transmission fluid is dark brown or black in color, or has a burnt smell, it may need to be changed.
