How to remove Starter on a 1990 Toyota 4 runner?

Tools and Materials:

Required:

- Phillips head screwdriver

- Flathead screwdriver

- 17mm socket wrench

- 14mm socket wrench

- 12mm socket wrench

- Pry bar

- Hammer

Optional:

- Jack

- Jack stands

Instructions:

1. Park the vehicle in a safe location, turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.

1. Disconnect the battery. The negative terminal is typically marked with a "-" sign. It is located on the battery terminal that is not connected to the starter motor. Use the 10mm socket wrench to loosen the negative battery cable clamp and remove the cable from the battery terminal.

1. Remove the air cleaner. This can be located on the passenger side of the vehicle, near the firewall. Use the flathead screwdriver to loosen the clamp on the air cleaner and pull it off.

1. Remove the starter motor mount. This is located on the passenger side of the vehicle, just below the air cleaner. Use the 14mm socket wrench to loosen the bolts that secure the starter mount to the engine block and remove the mount.

1. Remove the starter solenoid wires. These are located on the starter motor and are typically red and green. Use the 12mm socket wrench to loosen the nuts that secure the wires to the starter solenoid and remove the wires.

1. Remove the starter motor. Use the 17mm socket wrench to loosen the bolts that secure the starter to the engine block. There are typically two or three bolts that need to be removed. Once you have removed all the nuts and bolts, pull the starter motor out of the engine compartment.
