- Jack and Jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Socket set
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- C-clamp
- Brake fluid
- Funnel
- New brake pads
- New brake rotors (if necessary)
Instructions:
Step 1: Park your car in a safe location.
- Make sure the car is on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
Step 2: Loosen the lug nuts.
- Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels. Do not remove the lug nuts completely.
Step 3: Jack up the car.
- Place the jack under the car's front or rear crossmember.
- Raise the car until the tires are off the ground.
- Place jack stands under the car to support it.
Step 4: Remove the wheels.
- Use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels.
Step 5: Remove the brake caliper.
- Locate the brake caliper on the back of the wheel hub.
- Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two bolts that hold the caliper in place.
- Once the bolts are removed, lift the caliper off the rotor.
Step 6: Remove the old brake pads.
- The brake pads are located on either side of the rotor.
- Use the flat head screwdriver to pry the old brake pads out of the caliper.
Step 7: Inspect the brake rotor.
- Look for any signs of wear or damage on the rotor.
- If the rotor is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
Step 8: Install the new brake pads.
- Place the new brake pads in the caliper.
- Make sure that the pads are seated properly.
Step 9: Reinstall the brake caliper.
- Lower the brake caliper over the rotor.
- Install the two bolts that hold the caliper in place.
- Tighten the bolts until they are snug.
Step 10: Replace the wheels.
- Put the wheels back on the car.
- Tighten the lug nuts until they are snug.
Step 11: Lower the car.
- Remove the jack stands from under the car.
- Lower the car until the tires are on the ground.
Step 12: Test the brakes.
- Start the car and pump the brake pedal several times.
- The brakes should feel firm and responsive.
- Test the brakes at a low speed before driving at higher speeds.
Step 13: Check the brake fluid level.
- Open the hood of the car and locate the brake fluid reservoir.
- Check the fluid level and add more if necessary.
Step 14: Clean up.
- Clean up any brake fluid or grease that spilled during the repair.
- Dispose of the old brake pads and rotors in a responsible manner.
