How do you replace the water pump on a 1990 Cadillac 4.5L?

Tools and Materials Needed

* Replacement water pump

* Gasket

* Bolts

* Pliers

* Flat-blade screwdriver

* Phillips-head screwdriver

* Allen wrench

* Wrench set

* Socket set

* Anti-freeze

* Distilled water

* Funnel

Instructions

1. Drain the coolant. Open the radiator drain plug and the drain plug on the engine block. Allow all of the coolant to drain into a catch pan.

2. Remove the water pump bolts. There are four bolts that hold the water pump onto the engine. Use a wrench to loosen and remove these bolts.

3. Remove the old gasket. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the old gasket off of the engine.

4. Install the new gasket. Place the new gasket on the engine and make sure that it is properly seated.

5. Install the new water pump. Place the new water pump on the engine and secure it with the bolts that you removed earlier.

6. Reinstall the coolant. Use a funnel to add coolant to the radiator. Add enough coolant to fill the radiator and the engine block.

7. Run the engine. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks. If there are no leaks, turn off the engine.

8. Top off the coolant. Add more coolant to the radiator if necessary.

Tips

* When draining the coolant, make sure to catch it in a catch pan. Coolant is toxic, so it is important to dispose of it properly.

* Be careful not to drop any bolts or screws into the engine.

* If you have any questions, consult a repair manual or a qualified mechanic.
