How do you change the clutch in a peugeot 405 MI16?

Tools and Equipment

- A set of wrenches

- A set of sockets

- A screwdriver

- A pry bar

- A transmission jack

- A clutch alignment tool

- A new clutch kit

Instructions:

1. Prepare the vehicle. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Disconnect the battery. Engage the parking brake. If possible, lift the vehicle and safely secure the wheels off the ground.

2. Remove the transmission. Detach the cables connected to the transmission

(e.g., speedometer cable, shift cables, etc.). Loosen or detach the starter motor mounting bolt or bolts, but don’t separate the starter from its electrical source. Support the transmission with the transmission jack. Remove the transmission support. Remove the transmission mounting bolts and separate the transmission from the engine. Gently pull or pry the transmission away from the engine far enough to expose the clutch assembly.

3. Remove the clutch. Remove the clutch cover bolts and take off the clutch cover. Inspect the clutch cover, pressure plate, and friction disc for wear or damage. If any of these components are damaged or worn, replace them with the new clutch kit’s components.

4. Install the new clutch. Before installing the new clutch, make sure that the flywheel is free of rust or grease. If necessary, clean the flywheel with a wire brush and brake cleaner. Mount the new clutch disc onto the flywheel, aligning the splines on the disc with the splines on the flywheel. Place the pressure plate over the clutch disc and install the clutch cover bolts, tightening them evenly and gradually until they are snug.

5. Install the transmission. Reinstall the transmission in reverse order of removal, making sure to carefully align the transmission input shaft with the clutch disc splines. Once the transmission is installed, reconnect all of the cables and electrical connections.

6. Test the clutch. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to warm up the transmission. Depress the clutch pedal and shift into first gear. If the vehicle moves forward, the clutch is working properly.

Note: Before reinstalling the transmission, use a clutch alignment tool to center the clutch disc properly on the flywheel. This will ensure that the clutch engages and disengages smoothly.
