1. Park on a level surface: Make sure the car is parked on a level surface and the engine is off. Let the engine sit for at least 5-10 minutes after driving to allow the oil to settle back down into the oil pan.
2. Locate the dipstick: Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick. It's usually a yellow or bright colored handle with a ring near the top. It might have markings that say "OIL" or have a symbol of an oil can.
3. Remove the dipstick: Carefully pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
4. Reinsert the dipstick: Fully reinsert the dipstick back into its tube.
5. Remove and check the dipstick: Remove the dipstick again. The oil level should be visible on the dipstick. There will usually be markings indicating minimum and maximum levels. The oil level should be between these two marks. Ideally, it should be close to the "full" mark.
6. Interpret the reading:
* Oil level at or near the "Full" mark: Your oil level is good.
* Oil level below the "Full" mark but above the "Low" mark: You might be okay for a short while, but it's best to add oil soon.
* Oil level at or below the "Low" mark: You need to add oil immediately. Driving with low oil can seriously damage your engine.
