Hyundai Kona Electric confirmed for 2018

Yesterday Hyundai officially presented the all new Kona compact SUV and it looks like the electric version will be a direct competitor to the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Opel Ampera-e. Let’s see why.

Hyundai Kona Electric

Length: 4.165 mm

Width: 1.800 mm

Height: 1.500 mm

Range: 390 km (242 miles) – South Korean test cycle is very similar to the one EPA uses in the USA.

Chevrolet Bolt EV – Opel Ampera-e

Length: 4.166 mm

Width: 1.765 mm

Height: 1.595 mm

Range: 383 km (238 miles) – South Korean test cycle is very similar to the one EPA uses in the USA.

In my opinion, until the Hyundai Kona Electric arrives next year, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is left without direct alternatives, since other electric cars available have very different range, price or dimensions.

Given that both electric cars have very similar dimensions and range, I won’t be surprised if they share the same battery pack from LG Chem.

I’m curious to see what novelties will the 2018 model year bring to Chevrolet Bolt EV and if GM will increase production considerably, not only for the USA, but also for the rest of the world – especially now that Opel was sold to the PSA Group.

What do you think?
