An affordable mass market electric vehicle? Yes please. Volkswagen’s I.D Neo is the first of the highly innovative all-electric I.D range. The I.D Neo electric car was developed from previous concepts which first showcased at the Paris Motor Show in 2016. Volkswagen are slowly drip feeding the spec and designs to the world, but recently a prototype in camo wrapping was spotted in testing.
The car will be an e-Golf sized hatch that is said to be the world’s first carbon neutral produced vehicle. This means these electric cars are to be clean and green all the way through their life. Renewable energy will be used to power the VW plant where the vehicles are produced, the battery production will be as sustainable as possible and as the production can not be 100% emissions carbon-neutral VW claims they will balance this out with certified climate projects.
The starting price of £22,500 will play a big part in the popularity of the vehicle, it will be one of the cheapest electric vehicles on the market (this could help lots more drivers make the switch to EV). Another highlight of the electric vehicle will be the range which is reported to start at 205 miles WLTP for the smallest battery version.
The I.D Neo will be available in 3 battery sizes 48kWh, 55kWh and a larger option of 62kWh. The entry-level battery will have a range of around 205 miles WLTP and the largest battery is expected to give you up to a pleasing 340 miles WLTP, putting any range anxiety you may have behind you. Official real-world range figures have yet to be discovered! This EV’s DC fast charging capabilities mean you will be able to top up the battery in just a short time at public rapid chargers. On the base 48kWh battery, it should take around 30 mins to gain a charge of 80% on a rapid charger and on a standard 7kWh wall box home charger a full recharge might take around 7 hours.
The I.D Neo will be a 5 door hatchback, very similar in size to the VW Golf. It was developed to be a compact all rounder with the hope to make electric cars the everyday choice. Built on VW’s new Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform which due to be used on a range of new electric vehicles.
