Vw beetle type 1 pops out of reverse is there an adjustment on the shifter?

There is an adjustment nut inside the shifter that holds the shifter rod against the side that reverse is locked in. The shifter should pop out of any gear if a lot of force is applied, but it shouldn't happen easily while driving because it could easily be slipped into reverse unless you are at a full stop.

This is how you remove the shifter in the first place.

1. Park the car in a level area and apply the parking brake.

2. Remove the four bolts holding the shifter dust boot to the transmission tunnel.

3. Remove the bolts holding the shifter mounting plate to the transmission tunnel.

4. Pull the shifter knob upward to remove it from the shifter shaft.

5. Remove the shifter shaft seal.

6. Lift the shifter assembly up out of the transmission.

To adjust the shifter, you will need to have the following tools:

- A 7mm Allen key

- A flat-head screwdriver

- A 13mm wrench

- A 15mm wrench

Here are the steps on how to adjust the shifter:

1. Insert the 7mm Allen key into the set screw on the bottom of the shifter.

2. Turn the set screw clockwise to tighten it and counter-clockwise to loosen it.

3. Shift the transmission into reverse and check to make sure that the shifter does not pop out. If it does, repeat steps 1 and 2 until the shifter is adjusted properly.

4. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the lock washer in place and remove it.

5. Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the nut on the shifter linkage.

6. With a 15mm wrench, rotate the nut on the top until the shifter no longer pops out of the reverse position.

7. Tighten the lock nut with a 13mm wrench and replace the lock washer and two screws.

8. Reinstall the shifter shaft seal.

9. Insert the shifter assembly back into the transmission.

10. Reinstall the bolts holding the shifter mounting plate to the transmission tunnel.

11. Reinstall the bolts holding the shifter dust boot to the transmission tunnel.
