How do you change the front brake rotors on a 2002 Nissan Xterra?

Tools

* lug wrench

* chock

* floor jack

* jack stands

* ratchet

* socket set

* flathead screwdriver

* C-clamp

* Wire brush

* Brake caliper compression tool

Parts

* New brake rotors

* Brake pads

1. Loosen the lug nuts.

Park your Xterra on a flat surface and engage the parking brake. Using the lug wrench, loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them completely.

2. Raise the vehicle and secure.

Place a chock behind one of the rear tires to prevent the vehicle from rolling back. Lift the front of the vehicle with the floor jack and then place the jack stands underneath the pinch welds to support the vehicle.

3. Remove the lug nuts and wheel.

Use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts and then pull the wheel straight toward you to remove it.

4. Remove the brake caliper bracket bolts.

Locate the two bolts that hold the brake caliper bracket in place and remove them with the ratchet and socket set.

5. Remove the brake caliper.

Gently lift the brake caliper off the rotor, being careful not to let the brake fluid leak out. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the brake pads apart if they are stuck.

6. Remove the old rotor.

Slide the old rotor off the hub. If it is stuck, you may need to use a hammer to loosen it.

7. Install the new rotor.

Place the new brake rotor on the hub and make sure that it is seated correctly.

8. Reinstall the caliper bracket.

Slide the caliper bracket back over the rotor and secure it with the two bolts. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque using a torque wrench.

9. Reinstall the brake pads.

If you removed the brake pads, reinstall them now. Make sure that the pads are seated correctly in the caliper bracket.

10. Reinstall the wheel and lug nuts.

Place the wheel back on the hub and secure it with the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the specified torque using a torque wrench.

11. Lower the vehicle.

Jack up the vehicle and remove the jack stands. Then lower the vehicle.

Your brake rotors should now be replaced. Test the brakes by driving the Xterra slowly and braking firmly. If you feel any pulsation or vibration in the brake pedal, the rotors may not have been installed correctly.
